Interested in research-based approaches to addressing immigration-related conflict constructively and working toward social justice and peaceful coexistence? The interdisciplinary readings draw heavily on political science, sociology, and psychology, as well as other fields. This syllabus represents an attempt to bring a deeper understanding of the causes of such conflict, and research-based strategies for peacebuilding in migrant-receiving communities and countries. This course explores the conflicts that emerge as a result of intergroup encounters when people move to a new host country, whether they are migrating in search of economic opportunity or fleeing violence and oppression.
Using an interdisciplinary approach, the course examines the push and pull factors driving migration, as well as the economic and identity factors that explain host-country receptivity or exclusion. It delves into psychological theories of intergroup prejudice, identity formation, and ethnocentrism; sociological theories of networks, assimilation, and group threat, and political explanations of citizenship, political discourse, power, and international institutions to influence migration and refugee policy.
The course examines different approaches to addressing conflict between immigrants and the host population, including interpersonal approaches like dialogue, training, trauma awareness, and cross-cultural mediation, as well as system-level approaches like advocacy, networked peacebuilding, public policy, and strategic nonviolent tactics. Drawing concrete case studies from a range of contexts, the course will especially examine anti-immigrant political discourse in the U.

Informal traders and planners in the regeneration of historic city centres: In this competitive global market place, a particular perspective on history and culture is being sold. A modern expression of these social relations is the conflict which exists between planners and street traders, whose presence is seen to be inimical to tourism development.

He supported his claims with Spanish Royal decrees or Real Cedulas, that delineated the borders of Spain’s former overseas colonies. Moreover, to add legitimacy to his claims, on February 16, , Flores signed a treaty with Spain, whereby Flores convinced Spain to officially recognize Ecuadorian independence and its sole rights to colonial titles over Spain’s former colonial territory known anciently to Spain as the Kingdom and Presidency of Quito.

Greetings involving women are a kiss on the right cheek and a handshake between two men. In a business meeting and when meeting an indigenous person, a handshake is sufficient for women. So if you are wearing old, tattered travel clothes and flip flops, you will invariably get some stares. That said, Ecuadorians are infinitely patient with the ways of the foreign traveler and will treat you respectfully regardless of how raggedy your outfit—as long as you aren’t trying to get into a nice restaurant, bar or club dressed like a bum.
In the Andes, people tend to cover up a lot more than on the coast, partially because it is much colder and partially because the culture tends to be a bit more conservative. Men should never plan to travel bare-chested in the Andes. Likewise, women should never wear just a sports bra or swimsuit around town. If blending in is important to you, then wear pants more often than shorts, don’t wear flip flops; and when going out at night, men should wear collared shirts no hats!
Dress outside of cities and at the beach is much more casual, but the same basic principles apply. Food Manners Like all countries, there is a certain way to eat all typical meals. In Ecuador, for example, people toss popcorn and fried banana chips into ceviche. Table manners are more relaxed, though, so don’t worry too much about them.

Ecuador Guidebook If you’re only going to visit only Ecuador then I recommend you get this guide, which is far more detailed than the continental guide below, with options that cater to a range of budgets instead of only the shoestring backpacking crowd. Also it gives more respectable treatment to small cities and towns that the larger guide breezes over with a paragraph or two. The maps are excellent, the information is complete and thorough, and the reviews are accurate, which is why it’s often called “the bible” by many travelers.
The only problem is that everyone else has this book so if you are the type of person that wants to hit the isolated small towns you will be disappointed. My advice is to use this book for its maps and information on getting from city to city, but talk to the locals and other travelers for those isolated gems that Lonely Planet for some reason didn’t find worthy to include.
Spanish For Beginners My copy of this book is so beat up and weathered it’s disintegrating before my eyes. I took it with me to South America because I loved how it was organized in a logical way that kept me motivated to keep studying. Lessons start short and easy and increase in complexity as you tackle frustrating readings that help take you to the next level.
The only downside of this book is that it was originally published in so some of the vocabulary is very dated. Still, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a modern equivalent of this book whose teachings approach the same quality. Last time I checked you can grab a used copy from Amazon for less than a dollar.
